The computational scheme was developed to derive net Delta outflow estimates at Chipps Island, interior Delta flow esti mates at significant locations, and fish related parameters and indices. Details of the DAYFLOW program and data set are not repeated in this report. For background information about DAYFLOW please refer to the February 1986 DAYLFOW Program Docu mentation and DAYFLOW Data Summary User's Guide published by the DWR, Central District. DAYFLOW 1930-1955 (DF30/55) is a back ward extension of the DAYFLOW data set which, until now, covered water years 1955 through 1986. Further extension of DF30/55 was limited by the availability of rim flow data for the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. A complete description of input data and their sources are presented in Appendix A. The daily input, calculated and computed values were stored in an RBASE SYSTEM V data base. Average monthly values were calulated and are presented in Appendix B. The list of RBASE parameter codes and data types are presented in Tables 1 and 2, respectively. Both the daily and monthly values are available on diskette, as either RBASE or fixed field ASCII files, or on hard copy. Dayflow 1930/1955 was produced by Sheila Greene under the direction of Randy Brown with assistance from Arthur Winslow, Randy Brown, Pam Casselman and Kamyar Guivetchi of the DWR, Kathy Shay and John Bader of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and Mike Helm of the City of Sacramento, DESCRIPTION Some of the DF30/55 input parameters are different from the DAYFLOW 1956-1986 (DF56/86) input parameters, reflecting the availabili ty of historical data. The two major input parameter differenc es between DF56/86 and DF30/55 are the parameters representing Sacramento River flows and the parameters representing Yolo Bypass flows. Similarly, the parameters within DF30/55 changed over the time period, reflecting the availability of historic data. The one major difference within DF30/55, the parameters representing Yolo Bypass flows, necessitated dividing DF30/55 into two sections; DF30/39 and DF40/55. The unique DF30/55 parameter are decribed in the following paragraphs. The Sacramento River flows, in DF56/86, were initially repre sented by the Sacramento River at I Street station, and later by the Sacramento River at Freeport station. In order to obtain the equivalent of the DF56/86 Sacramento River flows in DF30/55, Sacramento River flows were represented by Sacramento River at Verona plus American River at Fair Oaks minus Sacramento Weir Spills to the Yolo Bypass minus Sacramento River diversions between Verona and Sacramento. The Yolo Bypass flows, in DF56/86, were represented by the Yolo Bypass near Woodland station. Since the Yolo Bypass near Wood land records extended to only 01/01/40, the Yolo Bypass near Woodland station was used in DF40/55 (similarly to DF56/86), but not in DF30/39. In DF30/39 the Yolo Bypass flows were repre sented by the Yolo Bypass at Lisbon station during the flood season, and the Yolo Bypass at the Mouth of the Sacramento Bypass plus the Sacramento Weir Spills to the Yolo Bypass plus South Putah Creek during the irrigation season. The Yolo Bypass at Lisbon records were obtained from the DWR, Flood Flows and Stages Report (FFSR) publication which originally presented data only for the flood season, usually for the months of October through April. The Yolo Bypass at the Mouth of Sacramento Bypass records were obtained from the DWR, Water Supervision Report (WSR) which originally presented data only for the irri gation season, usually for the months of March through October. The Yolo Bypass at Lisbon records were used for the months of October through April, and the Yolo Bypass at the Mouth of the Sacramento River were used for the months of May through Septem ber. There were three parameters in DF30/55 for which there were extensive periods of missing records. The Dry Creek near Galt gaging station was discontinued from water years 1934 through 1944. French Camp Slough flow records were unavailable before January 1950, and Stockton Diverting Canal records were unavailable before January 1944. There were three parameters in DF30/55 for which the gaging stations were located significantly upstream from the DF56/86 gaging stations (in addition to the Sacramento River described previously). The Calaveras River gaging station in DF30/55 was located near Jenny Lind, approximately 22 miles upstream from the DF56/86 Calaveras River gaging station near Stockton. The Jenny Lind station was also above the Mormon Slough diversion at Belota, therefore, the Stockton Diverting Canal gaging station is omitted. The Bear River gaging station in DF30/55 was lo cated near Lockeford, approximately eight miles upstream from the DF56/86 Bear Creek gaging station near Lodi. The Putah Creek gaging station in DF30/55 was located below Monticello Dam, approximately 22 miles upstream from the DF56/86 South Fork Putah Creek gaging station near Davis. The USBR Solano Project was not completed until 1959, therefore there were no Putah South Canal diversions from Putah Creek in DF30/55 The flows through Georgianna Slough were calculated for the entire period of record in DF30/60 in order to obtain estimates for flows past Rio Vista and Jersey Point. The flows through ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Page 6* the Georgianna Slough, before completion of the Delta Cross Channel, were calculated using the empirical equation developed for DF56/86 to calculate flows through Georgianna Slough when both Delta Cross Channel gates were closed. COMMENTS The DF30/55 input data sources were used to calculate Net Delta Outflow at Chipps Island from water year 1955 through 1960 in order to compare Net Delta Outflow obtained from DF56/86 input data sources. The daily Net Delta Outflow values for DF30/55 and DF56/86, and the percent difference between DF56/86 and DF30/55 are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. DAYFLOW 1930/1955 Net Delta Outlfow compared very well to DF56/86 Net Delta Outflow for the overlapping years. Eighty-eight percent of the DF56/86 values were within 10 percent of the correspond ing DF30/55 values. There were three distinct time periods where DF30/55 Net Delta Outflow differred from DF56/86 Net Delta Outflow by greater than 50 percent; December 1955, June 1959 and July 1960. The Net Delta Outflow during these time periods was relatively small and the differences appear to caused by the values for Miscellaneous Stream flows. In DF56/86, the mean monthly Miscellaneous Stream flow values were assigned to the daily values through Water Year 1975, therefore, during months where there were large flucuations in Miscellaneous Stream flows combined with small Net Delta Outflows, DF30/55 differed from DF56/86 by more than 50 percent. .PA .PA .PA APPENDIX A DAYFLOW 1930/1955 INPUT DATA DESCRIPTIONS .PA American River at Fair Oaks, CA American River at Fair Oaks streamflow records were obtained electronically from United States Geological Survey (USGS), Water Storage and Retrieval (WATSTORE) Daily Values data base. Bear Creek near Lockeford, CA Bear Creek at Harmony School near Lockeford was used from 10/01/29 through 09/30/30. Records were obtained electroni ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Page 7* cally from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. This station was discontinued after 09/30/31 and replaced by Bear Creek near Lockeford beginning 10/01/30. Bear Creek near Lockeford was used from 10/01/30 through 09/30/60. Records were ob tained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. The Bear Creek near Lockeford station is approximately 2 miles upstream from the Bear Creek at Harmony School near Lockeford station. Calaveras River at Jenny Lind, CA Calaveras River at Jenny Lind streamflow records were obtained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. Contra Costa Canal near Oakley, CA Contra Costa Canal diversion flow records were obtained elec tronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. Records were available beginning 02/01/52, although the canal operated under interim contracts from 1940 until 1951 (Jackson and Paterson, 1977). Delta Cross Channel Gates The Delta Cross Channel Gates Change records were obtained on hard copy from the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), Central Valley Project Operations (CVPO). Delta Cross Channel construction was completed August 1951. The records indicate the cross channel gates were first opened 03/17/53 but it is unclear whether the gates were not operated before 03/17/53 or the records are unavailable. Delta Cross Channel Gates Change Date and Time The Delta Cross Channel gates change date and time records were obtained on hard copy from USBR, CVPO. There were four dates on which the gates change time was missing for which an estimated time was entered. A gates change time of 10:00 was entered for 03/20/53, 04/24/53, 02/09/54 and 02/14/54. Both the gates change date and gates change time were missing for a gates closure recorded between 04/04/58 and 07/02/58. This gates closure was ignored because there was no apparent method to estimate the closure date and time. Cosumnes River at Michigan Bar, CA Cosumnes River at Michigan Bar streamflow records were ob tained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. Dry Creek near Galt, CA The Dry Creek near Galt, CA streamflow records were obtained from the USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. The gaging station was discontinued after 09/30/33 and reinstated 10/01/44. There were no available records for Dry Creek from 10/01/33 through 09/30/44 and no attempts were made to esti mate the flows during this 10 year period. French Camp Slough near French Camp, CA French Camp Slough flow records were obtained on hard copy from the DWR, Sacramento-San Joaquin Water Supervision Report ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Page 8* (WSR). The beginning of record for this station was 01/12/50 and no prior flow records for French Camp Slough were avail able. No attempts were made to estimate the flows in French Camp Slough prior to 01/12/50. Gross Channel Depletions A modification of the daily gross channel depletion constants used in DF56/86 were used in DAYFLOW 1930/1960. Gross channel depletion constants were developed by the DWR in 1965. In order to account for the reduced level of agricultural development from 1930 through 1960, the gross channel depletion constants were multiplied by the fraction of irri gated acres each year divided by the irrigated acres in 1965 (Table 3). The DF56/86 Gross Channel Depletion constants are the same each year and therefore do not reflect historic meteoroligic or hydrologic conditions. The modified Gross Channel Depletions are used in DAYFLOW 1930/1960 to maintain consistency with DF56/86 rather than attempting to use historic gross channel depletions. Miscellaneous Diversions Miscellaneous Diversions was used to account for water diver sions and transfers other than delta consumptive use (Gross Channel Diversions) and exports (Contra Costa Canal and Cen ral Valley Project Pumping Plant). Traditionally, island flooding caused by levee breaks was entered under Miscella neous Diversions, but no attempt was made to include island flooding in the DAYFLOW 1930/1960 because of the infeasability of researching the records. Mokelumne River at Woodbridge, CA Mokelumne River at Woodbridge streamflow records were obtained elcetronically from USGS, WATSTORE Daily Values data base. Sacramento River at Verona, CA Sacramento River at Verona streamflow records were obtained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. Sacramento River Diversions from Verona to Sacramento Sacramento River Diversion records were obtained on hard copy from the DWR, WSR. The WSR reported monthly Sacramento River diversion flows in acre-feet per month (afm) for the irriga tion season only, up to 1948. The records for the winter months in the WSR, begin ning in 1948, indicate two major diverters; the City of Sacra mento and Woodland Farms, Inc. (formerly Conaway Ranch). The City of Sacramento monthly diversions for the months of Novem ber, December, January and February from 1929 through 1947 were obtained on hard copy from the City of Sacramento, E.A. Fairbairn Water Treatment Plant (formerly, the American River Water Treatment Plant). Due to time contraints, no attempt was made to obtain records for Woodland Farms Inc. diversions for the same time periods. In order to account for returns from diversions, the Sacramento River monthly diversion flows in afm were multiplied by 0.54; the average return water in percent of diversion water for the months June through Septem ber for the years 1930 through 1943 reported in the WSR. Sacramento River monthly diversions were converted from afm to an average monthly cfs and assigned to Sacramento River daily diversions for the corresponding months. Stockton Fire Station #4 Precipitation Stockton Fire Station precipitation records were obtained on hard copy from the DWR, Central District, Surface and Ground water Data Section. San Joaquin River near Vernalis, CA San Joaquin River near Vernalis streamflow records were obtained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Page 10* Putah Creek near Winters, CA Putah Creek near Winter streamflow records were obtained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. The beginning of record for the Putah Creek near Winters station was 10/01/30, therefore streamflow records from the Putah Creek at Winters station were used from 10/01/29 through 09/30/30. Putah Creek at Winters streamflow records were also obtained from WATSTORE. The Putah Creek near Winters station is located 6 miles west of Winters, whereas the Putah Creek at Winters is located at Winters. Sacramento Weir Spills to the Yolo Bypass Sacramento Weir Spills flow records from 01/01/40 through 09/30/60 were obtained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. Sacramento Weir Spills records from 10/01/29 through 12/31/39 were obtained on hard copy from the DWR, Flood Flows and Stages in the Sacramento and Northern San Joaquin Valleys Reports (FFSR). No flow was recorded over the Sacramento Weir to the Yolo Bypass from water year 1929 through water year 1934 and during water year 1939. Otherwise flow was recorded over the Sacramento Weir during periods of weir gate operations. Latter records indicate the possibility of small flows over the Sacramento Weir during periods when the weir gates were not operated. Delta Mendota Canal at Tracy Pumping Plant near Tracy, CA Tracy Pumping Plant flow records from 06/01/51 through 09/30/60 were obtained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. Yolo Bypass at Lisbon, CA Yolo Bypass at Lisbon gage height records for the flood season from 1929 through 1939 were obtained on hard copy from the DWR, FFSR. Current meter measurements performed in 1935, 1936, 1937 and 1938 were obtained on hard copy from the DWR, FFSR. A rating curve equation was developed using regression analysis in order to convert gage height in feet to flow in cfs. The equation, CFS = 0.02096103 * Gage Height ^ 5.290758, best fit the data points with a correlation coefficient of 0.98 (Fig. 3). Two hundred and sixty three daily gage height records were missing out of 2210 possible records. The flows in cfs were estimated graphically for these missing records by fitting a smooth curve between non-contiguous data points (Table 4). In most cases, the estimates appear reasonable because either the number of consecutive missing records was small, or the flows were low enough to be insignificant, or there were no significant changes in gage heights recorded at the Fremont Weir, Sacramento Weir, Yolo Bypass at Mouth of Sacramento Weir or South Putah Creek in the DWR, FFSR. There was a period of questionable estimates in early January 1935. The gage height record at Yolo Bypass at Lisbon for water year 1935 begins on 01/16/35 with a corresponding flow ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Page 11* of 10742 cfs, although the gage height record at Yolo Bypass at Mouth of Sacramento Bypass appears to start increasing on 01/03/35. No attempt was made to estimate the flow increase for Yolo Bypass at Lisbon from 0 cfs to 10742 cfs, therefore the Yolo Bypass flow for the first half of January 1935 is questionable. Yolo Bypass at Mouth of Sacramento Bypass Yolo Bypass at Sacramento Bypass flow records for the irrigation season from 1929 through 1939 were obtained on hard copy from the DWR, WSR. Yolo Bypass near Woodland ,CA Yolo Bypass near Woodland flow records from 10/01/39 through 09/30/60 were obtained electronically from USGS WATSTORE Daily Values data base. .PA .PA Table 4.
